Belgian Economic Delegation Visit to South African Nuclear Energy Corporation

The decision in 2012 to establish a subsidiary of NTP Radioisotopes in Belgium (officially started trading as NTP Europe on 01 February 2013), as well as the long-standing and close relationship on Molybdenum-99 production with the Belgian Company IRE, had a positive spin-off for NTP and its stakeholders when part of a Belgian Economic Delegation that formally visited South Africa, under the leadership of Princess Astrid of Belgium, spent time at the Necsa Visitor Centre and the SAFARI Reactor. The purpose of the visit was to establish contact with NTP and Necsa, as the direct Stakeholders of NTP Europe, which is located in Fleurus, Belgium.

The part of the Belgian Economic Delegation that visited Pelindaba was, led by Minister Jean-Claude Marcourt, Vice-President and Minister for the Economy, SMEs, Foreign Trade and New Technologies of the Walloon Government and Vice-President and Minister for Higher Education of the Government of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

The Minister and delegation were warmly welcomed by the Chairperson of the Necsa Board, Ambassador Seekoe; the CEO of Necsa, Mr Phumzile Tshelane (Mr Tshelane is also the Chairperson of the NTP Europe Board of Directors); NTP’s Executive Manager, Ms Mapula Letsoalo and the Managing Director of NTP Europe, Mr Ivan Radebe.

A visit to the SAFARI Reactor was accompanied by presentations on the reactor and on nuclear medicine and, was followed by a formal luncheon at the Necsa Visitor Centre, hosted by the Chairperson of the NTP Board, Dr Namane Magau.

This meaningful visit will entrench meaningful high level contact for NTP Europe and Mr Radebe, with the Ministry that overseas foreign investment and international trade in the Walloon region of Belgium.

A seminar on radiation applications in healthcare was held in the Hyatt Hotel in Rosebank in October 2013, with presentations by the Belgian and South African nuclear medicine industries.
